Kitchen island made of piano parts and recycled items

If you remember back in January I told you about and old piano that I was taking apart to recycle and make into something useful and pretty.  Well i've finished the first item of that project.  A kitchen island.  Below are the parts that were used to construct the island.

The fancy front of the piano.

Some wood from the body of the piano.

These are old legs from a very old table that I've been saving.

And here is the design I came up with. The top of course is the decorative part of the piano. The apron and bottom shelf is made of other parts of the piano cabinet that were ripped down to smaller boards. I designed the style and my dad put it together for me.  This is the island before it was painted.

Another view upside down.

The finished island without the glass top.

A close up view of the decorative top.

And the final piece with the glass top. The glass top was also a recycled piece.  A friend gave it to me and I knew I'd use it sometime. It was the correct width but a little long.  So one of my son-in-laws that is in the glass business cut some off for me. Thanks Jason. And here it is in all its glory.  I LOVE it!

Stay tuned for more things to come from that great piano.

You will seek me and find me
when you seek me with all your heart.

  1. Oh, my, goodness....I LOVE this! What a beautiful, functional piece and creative use of materials. I actually really love your whole kitchen/living room space there....great job! My husband and I build a lot of our own furniture with function and storage in mind but this is more like art.

  8. This is wonderful. I have a kitchen island that is made out of an old baby crib and I love it. I had a stainless steel top fabricated for it so I could use it for prep work, it is on wheels so it also doubles for a buffet table when I entertain large groups. Yours is amazing and so pretty.

  17. That is so gorgeous! What a fun thing to have in your kitchen. My sister took the "fancy" part from a piano and made a headboard out of it......it too is gorgeous. I love the color of your kitchen cabinets. Can you tell me the color and brand of paint?

    Replies
    1. Thanks so much. I would love to see that headboard. Sounds really pretty. The brand of paint is Behr premium plus in a semi gloss enamel. The color is ultra pure white 3050. It's just the white color in the can that doesn't need to be mixed. It's from Home Depot. I painted over stained cabinets over 20 yrs. ago. It's great paint. I may have refreshed them once. Good luck. Hope this helps.

  27. This is gorgeous. I love it. And I love old pianos. I had an old piano years ago. I gave it to my sister when I move. There was no place for it at my new home. THe keys were literally destroyed. I wonder where is that old piano. Recycling it into something useful is a great idea.

  31. Love this! Trying to figure out if I can fit something similar in my kitchen! Could you give dimensions of the island? And how much space do you have between the island and the row of cabinets?

    1. Thank you. The size of the island is 16"wide by 5' long. There are cabinets on both sides of the island. The measurement from one side to the next is 7 1/2 feet. Hope this helps. Good luck.

  39. Love this piece! I have a 1913 piano that I bought recently, hoping to actually use, but the sound box had split and can't be repaired, so I've been holding onto it to make something with...or maybe several things. This is definitely one I want to try. I do have a questions though. the trim around the carved panels is raised above the primary surface level of the piece. How did you adjust for that when putting the glass topper on? I can see something clear at the corners of the glass, but I'm not sure exactly what it might be. can you please tell me?

    1. Thank you. I used little rubber tabs on the corner of the wood piece to elevate it just a touch. Usually you can find them where the little dot tabs for cabinets are. Also in the area where you would find the pads for chair and table legs. I've also seen them used on the backs of pictures to keep them level on the wall. Hope this helps. Good luck with your piano projects. If you look through my blog you'll also see other things I made from that piano if you're interested.
